Course Description

Net unrealized appreciation (NUA) is a powerful yet often overlooked strategy that allows individuals to reduce taxes on employer stock held within a 401(k) or similar retirement plan. This webinar provides a comprehensive, easy-to-understand breakdown of how NUA works, when to use it, and how it can lead to significant tax savings in retirement.

Individuals with employer stock in their 401(k), financial advisors and tax professionals, and anyone interested in tax-efficient retirement planning will gain insights through real-world examples, visual illustrations, and tax-saving strategies. By the end of the session, attendees will have a clear understanding of whether NUA is right for them or their clients, how to strategically plan distributions, and how to maximize after-tax wealth in retirement.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the key components of net unrealized appreciation and outline its tax advantages

  • Define the eligibility requirements necessary for implementing an NUA, and evaluate common pitfalls to avoid

  • Evaluate potential tax savings scenarios in which NUA is preferred over alternative strategies such as traditional IRA rollovers
